How Does Invisalign Work?

Instead of attaching brackets and wires to your teeth to achieve movement, Invisalign uses custom clear aligners created based on Dr. May’s treatment plan for your smile. You’ll wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day, removing them for meals, brushing, and flossing. Compliance is the key to success with clear aligners, so wearing them as much as possible will help you achieve your treatment goals on time.

Every two to three weeks, you’ll move to the next set of aligners in the series, and you can change them at home, which means fewer visits with your Invisalign dentist.

While every patient’s needs are unique, most patients finish their treatment with Invisalign in 10 to 18 months.

At May Dentistry, we want to ensure you get the best results from your clear aligner treatment. Proper care extends the life of your aligners and contributes to more effective treatment and better oral health.

5 Easy Steps to Care for Clear Aligners with Invisalign

Daily Cleaning Routine

Clean your aligners every morning and night using lukewarm (never hot) water and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Avoid using toothpaste as it can be abrasive and scratch the plastic, creating hiding places for bacteria. Instead, use a small amount of clear, unscented antibacterial soap, rinsing thoroughly afterward.

When Eating and Drinking

Always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than plain water. After meals, brush, rinse, and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back in. This prevents food particles and bacteria from getting trapped.

Storage During Meals

Keep your aligner case with you at all times. When you remove your aligners, store them in their case—never wrap them in a napkin or tissue, as they can be accidentally thrown away or damaged.

Avoid Aligner Damage

Keep aligners away from heat sources, which can warp the plastic. Never soak them in mouthwash or cleaning solutions containing alcohol, as these can damage the material and discolor your aligners.

Regular Maintenance

Weekly soaks in a denture cleaner or specialized aligner cleaning solution can help remove stubborn buildup and keep your aligners fresh.

What Problems Can Invisalign Correct?

Invisalign works well for most patients; however, if you have complex bite concerns, Dr. May might suggest braces with an orthodontist.

Clear aligners are ideal for these situations:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Spaces or gaps between teeth
  • Overbites and underbites
  • Certain crossbites
  • Mild open bites
  • Relapse after previous orthodontic treatment

The best way to determine if Invisalign is right for your needs is to book an evaluation with Dr. May. She uses x-rays, photos, and a thorough exam to determine whether clear aligners suit your treatment needs, and she can even show you what your finished smile will look like with 3-D imaging.
